The spirit of Montmartre

In 1880, Montmartre was a remote and dangerous area of Paris that began to attract many young creators: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Signac, Pierre Bonnard and....many people moved there. All of them wanted to live on low spending, work in bohemian Paris and avoid the bourgeois center of the French capital.

The streets of Montmartre and the entertainment found in cabarets, theaters, concert cafes and circuses was a strong inspiration for artists.

Toulouse-Lautrec represents a key figure in linking the artists and intellectuals who placed Montmartre in the spotlight of transgression and the avant-garde of the late s. XIX.

This is the Le chat noir poster. It was a cabaret with music and shadow theater
